The planer's three-horsepower motor easily works through rough lumber. View larger. |
Powered by a 3-horsepower, 240-volt, 1-phase, 60-hertz motor, the DELTA 22-790X 15-Inch Planer easily works through rough lumber. Its fast, dual-feed rates (16 fpm/30 fpm) let you power through jobs, while its motor-on-top design saves you time by eliminating the need to move in-feed and out-feed rollers every time you make a cut. In addition, Delta's exclusive serrated in-feed roller, three-knife cutter head, and deluxe roller stand make light work of even the biggest jobs.
Efficient Power Distribution and Smooth Stock Feeding
For powerful and responsive operation, the oil-bath gear box takes power for the feed rollers directly from the cutter head, while the spiral, serrated-steel in-feed roller and polyurethane out-feed roller keep stock moving smoothly and efficiently.
Precise, Accurate, and Easy-to-Adjust
For precision and accuracy, the 22-790X's cutter head assembly features a patented adjustment system that raises and lowers cutter head on four precision-ground columns.
Rugged Construction with Cast-Iron Table and Dust Chutes
As durable as it is powerful, the22-790X features a rugged chain-and-sprocket drive that provides positive feeding and long running life. Dust and debris are kept away from the planer via 4-inch and 5-inch dust chutes for extended durability. And the 15- x 62-1/2-inch table is made of sturdy cast iron for protection against wear and tear.

Worth the price : DELTA 22-790X X Series 15-Inch Planer
Howdy,
I upgraded to this Delta machine after having a 13inch DeWalt portable for years. The DeWalt was great for what it is - portable for small projects. As soon as we started needing to plane more than 6 or 7 boards at a time, or a piece of rough lumber, the DeWalt became a time issue, and we would dream of a planer that could suck in a rough board and spit it out smooth without a bunch of work on our part. We looked at just about every 15 inch, 3hp, 220V planer on the market and ended up with the Delta mostly because of the folding in/outfeed tables. We have a relatively small shop and don't always need the planer, so being able to have a machine that takes up less floor space when it's not in use is a bonus. You will need two really strong people, or four not so strong people, or a forklift, to mount the planer head to the base. Set-up took awhile, especially to get the tables adjusted correctly. This is definitely a two person job, but they haven't moved since. Note that you will need to buy a wheeled base if you want to be able to move it around your shop.
We have a lifetime supply of rough doug fir lumber and one of our main issues with the DeWalt was that the rubber feed roller couldn't push rough lumber through. Not so with the Delta, it's serrated feed roller keeps the rough lumber moving nicely and the rollers help reduce friction between the board and the tables, and you can take off about 3 times the amount of wood in one pass that you could with the DeWalt. So far we've put about 2,000 board feet of siding through the Delta and smile as we do it. You need a dust collector with a cyclone. We use a metal trashcan with an adapter lid like they sell here on amazon. The 30 gal can fills up in no time flat if you're removing 1/8 of an inch off of 12 inch wide boards. I was initially a little skeptical of the stability of the folding end tables, but after using it for a couple of months I can say that they are very sturdy and haven't come out of adjustment.
The only issue we've had so far is thatsmall chips from the edges of the rough sawn boards sometimes end up wedged between the planer table (not the in/out tables) and the rollers, so we have to blow them out at the end of the day. It would have been nice if Delta had put a slightly longer cord on the machine.
